The office of Nursing Department was established in the year 1996 and the first Nursing Superintendent was Mrs. Harjinder Kaur. The first batch of all cadres of nurses joined in the year 1996. The department of nursing is one of the largest departments of the institution. It employs 824 nursing personnels of all ranks under the Nursing Superintendent with 100% bed occupancy rate.

Nursing service is the heart of the institution which supports and provides comprehensive care to the patient. The office of the Nursing Department is one of the administrative office and this is the central point from which all activities related to nursing care are initiated, managed and reported. The department grew by leaps & bounds through the years under the headship of committed and able Nursing Superintendents. The Nursing Department functions in all the outpatient and inpatient units of the hospital.

Nursing Department functions with the goals that are delivering high standard of care, conducting in-service education program for the development of nursing staff, offering induction programs for newly recruited nursing staff, maintaining safe and conducive working condition for nurses and assisting in administration of hospital services. The nursing leadership plays a key role in providing directions and infrastructure to ensure that nurses are empowered to practice professionally and thus deliver high quality care. The Nursing Superintendent delegates the management of wards, operation theatres, and OPD areas of the hospital among the Assisting Nursing Superintendents and Nursing Sisters as the ward in-charges. Department is implementing individual patient-care assignment, which is the ideal for promoting the quality patient care and accountability of nurses for the welfare of the patients.

The office addresses key issues of practice, education, recruitment, regulation and maintaining quality of nursing care practice in patient care. The department maintains standing orders, which allow nursing team members to exercise their judgment in the times of emergency. Nursing staff is providing expertise care in specialized areas, i.e., Infection Control, Dialysis Unit, Cardiac Unit, Critical areas, Operation Theatres, Pain Management, and High Dependency Unit of the hospital. Nurses are also participating in community services like blood bank camps, de-addiction camps and research work of their areas and are also being trained for implementation of module for generation of indents, issue and return of medicines through e-hospital software.

Every year administration honours the various categories of nursing staff for the best staff nurse and best ward management with Rolling Trophy to motivate them for efficient working. These are awarded on the Eve of 26th January (Republic Day) and 15th August (Independence Day) each year. These are for the nurses who are compassionate, competent and ethically sound to practice and are all rounder.

Every year Nursing Department celebrates Nurses Week on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale with weeklong educational activities (like Best Ward competition, Quiz competition, Best Dressing room, Poster competition, and Health Talks related to theme, etc.) w.e.f 12th to 18th May.

Hence, the Nursing Department coordinates its functions with the functions of all other departments for efficient management of the department.
