The department of orthopaedics was started in the year 1993 and has since grown from its humble beginning into a centre of excellence for providing care to orthopaedic and trauma patients. All faculty members have received advanced training in management of orthopaedic problems and trauma not only at best centres in India but also abroad. Department provides medical care for musculoskeletal problems across the full spectrum of orthopaedic disorders and trauma. It caters to not only patients from Chandigarh but also from Punjab, Haryana Himachal Pradesh, U.P., J&K and Uttarakhand. The OPD attendance for the year 2019 was 80578, emergency registration was 14836 and indoor admissions were 4820. The total no. of surgeries performed were 4259 major and 2259 minor in the emergency.

Department is running 24 hour emergency services and a daily orthopaedic OPD as well as special clinics in OPD. There is an emergency operation theatre for care of fractures and other orthopaedic emergencies, which runs round the clock. Besides this, there are 3 modern operation theatres with state of the art laminar air flow running for six days a week. The operation theatres are equipped with all the equipment required for all kinds of orthopaedic surgeries including computer navigation, image intensifiers and other state of the art equipments for highest degree of accuracy. The department is running special clinics in musculoskeletal oncology, arthroplasty, sports medicine, hand surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, deformity correction, spinal disorders and has emerged as a referral center for these disorders.

The department has attached physiotherapy department for rehabilitation of patients.

The OPD attendance for the year 2017 was 76107, emergency registration was 16504, indoor admissions were 5111. The total no. of surgeries performed were 4345 major and 1088 minor in the emergency

Besides clinical care, department is a preferred choice for postgraduate training. Senior residency training programme of the department is highly sought after due to its quality of training and spectrum of orthopaedic conditions being treated.

The department has organized national, regional and state level conferences besides training workshops. The department is active in clinical and basic research and has numerous research publications in several international, national and state level journals.
