Recent Events & Achievements:

 

  • Mental Health Week 4-10 October 2024
  • The Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Ajeet Sidana, HOD, Psychiatry celebrated Mental Health Week from 4th to 10th October 2024, with a series of activities aimed at fostering greater understanding of workplace mental health.  This year’s theme, “It is Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace,” emphasizes the critical need for mental health awareness and support in professional environments.   • During this weeklong program ,Sensitization about Mental Health for patients and caregivers visiting GMCH,  a Nukkad Natak (street play) highlighting major mental health conditions, their symptoms, and available treatments. In addition, an Interactive Session for MBBS 2K23 batch students, focusing on fundamental mental health issues and their treatment.  Awareness Talk at Model Jail, Chandigarh, focusing on the urgent need to prioritize mental health in the workplace.
  • An engaging Interactive Session at Aanganwadi, Sector 56, Chandigarh, focusing on the theme “Effects of Workplace Stress on Mental Health.”  Interactive Session on “Work-Life Balance: The Key to Sustainable Productivity and Well-being” was organized at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH&RC), Mullanpur.
  • A mental health camp was organized at Maloya Senior Secondary School. An interactive session on "Prioritizing Mental Health: Building Healthy Habits for Academic Success" was conducted at Shri Dhanwantry Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Sector 46, Chandigarh.
  • Mental health week was concluded on 10th October by delivering awareness talk at Police Lines, Sector 26, Chandigarh and at Panjab University, Chandigarh, an interactive lecture on "Nurturing Mental Wellness: Habits for Enhancing Academic Performance"
  • Interactive session with PG Residents was held in E Block, GMCH.  Team from department of Psychiatry consisted of Drs Kamlesh Kumar Sahu, Prinka Aroa, Abhinav Agrawal, Harmanjeet, Sanya Sharma, Gurneet, Manreet Kaur, Deepika Lamba, Rashika, Rajnish, Mr.Avinash, Ms.Bablpreet, Nidhi Bansal and other staff contributed actively.
  • Awareness and interactive session conducted for employees in Model jail

 

 

  • Awareness program for Mental Health Sensitization to service users in MRD, B block

  • Sensitization Session regarding basics of mental health with MBBS 2k22 batch

 

 

  • The Department of Psychiatry hold monthly community camp at nearby villages of Chandigarh.
  • Community Psychiatry camp at Village Dhanas in January 2026, village Daria in February 2026, Village Butarla in March 2026 and Village Maloya held on 26th May 2026

 

  • Dr B. S. Chavan memorial lecture was organized by department of psychiatry and NGO Parivartan on 4th December 2025. The lecture was delivered by Dr Debashish Basu on “Why we need to talk about the social determinants of mental health.”

 

  • Dialogue on “Mental Health of LGBTQIA+” was organized by Department of Community Medicine and Department of Psychiatry, GMCH-32, Chandigarh on 7th March 2026. 
  • Assisting Social welfare department for 45 day medical assessments of persons with mental illness (PMI) and intellectual disabilities (IDs) for admission in newly constructed Group Home (GH) by Social welfare department, Chandigarh Administration.
  • International Conference on “Yoga for empowerment: Enhancing lives of Children with Intellectual Disabilities” was organized in GRIID in collaboration with Haryana Yog Aayog, Government of Haryana from 19-20th March 2026.
  • World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated in GRIID on 21st March 2026.
  • The Department conducted Dr. B.S. Chavan Memorial Rehabilitation program on 25th March 2026 with NGO Parivartan and the interactive program by NGO the Banyan, Chennai. The participants of the program included staff of Department of Psychiatry and various individuals under management from GMCH, MHI and GRIID.
  • World Bipolar Day was celebrated on 30th March 2026.
  • Sensitization of hospital attendants, security guards, emergency staff and data entry operators was carried out during March-April 2026 by Dr Ira Domun along with Dr Shivangi Mehta and Dr Vanita Ahuja, DMS of GMCH. The staff was trained during the interactive sessions in dealing compassionately with Persons with Disability.
  • World Autism Day was celebrated by the Department of Psychiatry on 1st April 2026

 

  • Occupational Therapy Workshop session was held by the Department of Psychiatry on 29th April 2026 with an invited lecture by Dr Anjali Joshi.

 

  • World Schizophrenia Day was celebrated on 23 May 2026 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM The theme for this year’s World Schizophrenia Day was “Beyond the Headlines”

 

  • World No Tobacco Day commemorated in OPD by interactive session with Patients

 

  • On, 26th June 2026, the International Day against Drug abuse and Illegal trafficking was commemorated in RHTC, Palsora in which Interactive session with patients was carried out by Dr Harmanjeet on the theme “World Drug Problem, persisting issues, new challenges and innovative responses.”
