Multi-Disciplinary Research Units
Started in 2013
The Department of Health Research, Government of India has set up Multi-Disciplinary Research Units (MRUs) in Government Medical Colleges and Research Institutions to build and improve the nation's infrastructure for health research. The Department of Health Research's mandate to "Promote, Coordinate, and Develop Basic, Applied, and Clinical Research" is fulfilled by this effort.
MDRU is currently functional at J Blockat Government Medical College and Hospital Chandigarh

Selection of proposals for funding under MDRU:
The call for proposals under MDRU GMCH32 Chandigarh is floated based on availability of funds. Proposal received under call are evaluated by research advisory committee (RAC) for funding. After approval of RAC the approved proposals are submitted to institute ethics committee. Proposal are initiated after approval of institute ethics committee.

Ongoing Research Projects under MDRU:
- Relationship of total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC) of saliva to dental caries in adolescents.
- Association of single nucleotide polymorphism in peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma2 gene with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity in north Indian population.
- To evaluate the role of BCR-ABL1 in myeloproliferative neoplasms.
- To validate cross sectional area of sural and tibial nerves on ultrasound in diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
- Angiogenic and inflammatory biomarkers of non-responders to anti-VEGF therapy in diabetic macular oedema.
- To study the effect of dexmedetomidine on ischemia-reperfusion injury after tourniquet release in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty.
- Role of Ultrasound-guided Intra-tumoral neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in the management of Oral squamous cell carcinoma: A Pilot Study.
- Impact of Hb variants on Hb glycosylation in diabetic patients.
- Pro-inflammatory markers in neonates with severe birth asphyxia.
Completed Research Projects under MDRU:
- Comparative evaluation of the diagnostic performance of Xpert MTB/Rif (GeneXpert) in comparison to PCR (IS6110) and cultures for the diagnosis of suspected cases of Tuberculous meningitis.
- Mapping of surgical margins after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in advance staged oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
- To assess the suitability of various antibiotics in patients having urinary tract infection with multidrug resistant pathogens from outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital.
- Comparative study of nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal swabs and oral saliva in Covid-19 testing by RT-PCR.
- Lactoferrin content in human breast milk across different gestational ages.
- Urinary podocalyxin - A marker of renal insult in prediabetic and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
- To study the kinetics of antibodies and lymphocyte response in the course of COVID-19 pathogenesis.
