SERVICES
The clinical services of the department
have undergone a major expansion and three surgical units are running - 18 OT tables each
week. The department is also providing specialised services in Vascular Surgery,
Neurosurgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Breast & Endocrine Surgery. The department
has also been actively contributing to surgicals research and litrature with over 45
National and International publications in last three years.

The
department of surgery has established Ksharsutra Therapy Centre with the grant in aid from
Department of AYUSH Ministry of Health Govt of India. This Ayurvedic Technique centre is
first of its kind to be established in an Allopathic teaching hospital. The centre is
aimed to provide Ksharsutra Therapy in various Ano-Rectal problems. Also the doctors from
both the systems i.e Allopathic as well as Ayurvedic shall be imparted training in
Ksharsutra Therapy.
RESEARCH AND
TRAINING
A
regular academic teaching program is run by the department consisting of Seminars,
Journal clubs, Clinical meetings, Surgico-Radiology and Surgico-pathology meetings &
beside Surgical-audit sessions. The undergraduate lecture schedule is specified
and 4 batches of MBBS have already passed through the department after completing their
training and final examinations. The department is at the anvil of starting of
Postgraduate degree training program soon leading to the degree of MS in general
surgery. The department has to date organised two CME programmes on GI Surgery &
Trauma Care in Surgery.
The Department of Surgery is planning to
start a training centre for Laparoscopic Surgery to the doctor of Punjab Health
Corporation. The sub-specialisties of Vascular Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery and
Renal transplant are expected to be functional during the year.
A number of publications have appeared in
scientific journals from the departmental faculty & residents. Prof. Kaushik is
co-ordinating a five center study on duodenal ulcer in collaboration with Uniuversity
College, London, financed by wellcome trust, UK.

CME PROGRAMMES,
CONFERENCE AND ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The department of Surgery organized a
CME-cum-Public Awareness Programme on Breast Cancer on 11th October 2008.
The National conference of Vascula
Society of India was organized from 6th - 9th November 2008. Department of Surgery was
co-host in this programme.
The
Department of Surgery on behalf of GMCH-32, Chandigarh in collaboration with Society for
Social Research Art and Culture, New Delhi, organized a national workshop on 31.1.2009 and
1.2.2009
The
Department of Surgery in collaboration with Venous Association of India organized an
International Symposium on Venous Disorders on 10.08.2009 at GMCH-32, Chandigarh.
The Department of Surgery, organized
National conference of International Medical Science Academy (IMSACON) on 24th
& 25th October 2009 at GMCH, Chandigarh. This conference
has been attended by international delegates from various countries.
